One of the main issues in field of Governance and Social Sciences is population dynamics and development. In this regard, this Masters program provides a multidisciplinary and multispectral training on themes related to population development, covering issues on population, economy, demographic dynamics, sexual reproductive health and HIV, population policies and environment and human settlements and gender dynamics. Issues of governance require knowledge of population dynamics in a broader sense. The program provides training which can assist in designing governance policies with the focus on population issues such as fertility, mortality and migration or population mobility and gender.

The program includes subjects grouped into three areas, namely, Population (Demographic concept and methods, demographic estimation and projections, migration and population distribution, reproductive health issues and population policies), economy (Economic principles, African Mozambique economy, Population economy and work force) and development (Development concepts and theories, population, development and environment, human settlements and gender socio-cultural aspects). Additionally, the program includes a set of courses on research methodology focusing on population studies (Social sciences research methods, basic statistics, mathematics and computation, applied statistics, design, monitoring and evaluation of projects, dissertation seminar and specialization seminars). The program takes four academic semesters, of which the last two are for preparation and defense of the dissertation. Assessment is done through long essays, papers, classroom presentations, class assignments, written or oral exam and public defence of the dissertation.

The program gives competences to manage population issues, assuming a multidisciplinary social sciences perspective. This program aims to enhance qualifications of graduates who will plan, analyze, monitor and implement actions in the context of population and development who can operate at local, regional, and international environments. The graduate is enabled to understand population issues, design public population policies regarding fertility dynamics, mortality reduction and population mobility which leads to demographic transition and demographic dividend. In issues of population governance the graduates can assist Government and Non-Government institutions including civil society organizations in dealing with current challenges, such as poverty alleviation, HIV/AIDS prevention, dissemination of public health, designing of gender perspective, prevention and mitigation of the climate changes, resilience to climate changes and natural events impact, forced migration and population mobility, human settlements, labor force mobility or policy for human development.
